Great Links!
No website stands alone, and we're most fortunate to have the support of others who've kindly linked us to their websites. Some present additional history on Birmingham's railroads and industry, while others feature an interesting aspect of the railroad industry or hobby. All will entertain you and enhance your knowledge of Birmingham's "last golden era" of railroading. Enjoy!
Historical Websites
Atlantic Coast Line & Seaboard Air Line Railroad Historical Society - A great source of information on these two important predecessor lines of today's CSX.
Birmingham Rails - The most comprehensive source of on-line information available regarding Birmingham railroad and industrial history. John Stewart has done an especially superb job profiling the area's extensive mining railroads in the Birmingham district.
Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society - Fans of the late, great Central of Georgia will find a wealth of information on the "CofG" on the Society's excellent site.
Frisco.org - Though not an historical website as such, this comprehensive message board boasts nearly 1,400 members and is devoted exclusively to "all things Frisco" including lots of historical information.
Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Historical Society - Though one of Birmingham's "lessor" roads, GM&O made a colorful addition to the rail scene. This fine website heralds the proud history of GM&O.
Illinois Central Historical Society - The "IC" brought a taste of the Midwest to the "Deep South" city of Birmingham. You'll learn much more about the "Main Line of Mid-America" on this website.
Louisville & Nashville Railroad Historical Society - The "Old Reliable" was (and still is) a favorite with Alabama railfans. Note: This site is undergoing a major renovation and is still "under construction."
Southern Railway Historical Society - An attractive and easily navigated website featuring Birmingham's predominant rail line of the "last golden era."
Railfan Websites
J-Guy Photos - Jonathan Guy is a talented young photographer who concentrates on Southeastern railroads, including main line, shortline, and operating museums. Though not specific to Birmingham, his website offers an entertaining glimpse into the past.
